Timo Werner could still sign for Liverpool

Timo Werner could still sign for Liverpool, according to the ‘expert’ who claimed that a deal was already done…

Laurel Canyon
‘SIR ALEX FERGUSON, the man who once ‘knocked Liverpool off their f***ing perch’, claimed a title-winning side should always build from a position of strength,’ begins Dave Kidd’s column on Liverpool and Timo Werner in The Sun.

‘The old Manchester United godfather would never allow a successful team to rest on its laurels and would always look to freshen things up as he amassed his 13 Premier League crowns.’

Indeed. Like in 1999 when his all-conquering team had just won a historic treble and he really shook things up by buying Mikael Silvestre and Quinton Fortune.

Timo time and time again
You will remember these words from ‘transfer expert’ Ian McGarry last week: “It’s our information that Werner has, as we have been reporting for some time now on the Transfer Window Podcast, agreed personal terms and a contract with Liverpool, a five-year contract that will pay the player around £140,000 per week.”

McGarry went on to explain at some length that Chelsea did not actually want Werner at all; after all, they have Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud. So what was his response to the breaking news that Werner has actually agreed a contract with Chelsea and not with Liverpool? Belligerence, obviously.

“It will be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp responds to this setback, if indeed that is the case.

“It is expected in some quarters that Liverpool may well make another bid having failed with an initial one around 16 days ago of €30m plus €15m in add-ons, which clearly is well below the rescission clause in Werner’s contract.

“But certainly is potentially open to being upped and therefore giving Chelsea some competition.”

It was indeed interesting to see Jurgen Klopp’s response. And he gave it on Sundaywhen he made it really very clear that he will not be signing anybody this summer for any real money.

Just give up, fella.

No. 10 dream
Back to Manchester United in 2020 and the Daily Mirror website hit pay-dirt with this headline:

‘Bruno Fernandes wears Marcus Rashford’s number 10 shirt in Man Utd training’

He certainly wore a number 10 shirt. And Marcus Rashford wore another. That’s what happens when you play two Manchester United teams numbered 1 to 11.

The second paragraph of the story tells us that ‘all those concerned Marcus Rashford has been stripped of the number to accommodate his team-mate need not worry’, but by now the Mirror have already got your precious click by making you think exactly that.

Polden, we salute you.

Funny guys
Meanwhile, on the Daily Express website, ‘Bruno Fernandes amusingly asked Nemanja Matic to “keep the distance” after Manchester United’s intra-squad friendly at Old Trafford on Saturday’.

What. A. Card.

Dirty Sancho
Manchester United might soon be getting a new No.7 and the excitement surrounding Jadon Sancho means that news of his transfer is precious to the Manchester Evening News

‘Manchester United news and transfers LIVE Jadon Sancho to Man Utd latest as Van de Beek interest confirmed’

And what is the ‘Jadon Sancho to Man Utd latest’? Why it’s that former West Ham and Everton midfielder Don Hutchison has advised United to sign Kai Havertz instead of Sancho, of course.

Almost bloody done, United fans.

‘Are Liverpool the ultimate overachievers? Premier League net transfer spends for last five years revealed with Reds 14th’ is a tempting headline on The Sun website.

Apparently, ‘new statistics show Manchester City’s net spend over the last five years is nearly six times more than this year’s runaway league leaders’. Will those ‘new statistics’ be the list which is available every single day on transfermarkt? Oh it would. Thanks.

They were just there waiting to be be ‘revealed’ by someone real.

Testing times
‘PREMIER LEAGUE stars are growing increasingly worried because their coronavirus testers are not tested themselves’ is the ‘exclusive’ headline on the back page of The Sun.

Odd how it takes nine paragraphs – by which time we are well clear of the back page – before it is mentioned that the testers are all medical professionals and are all wearing ‘full PPE’.

If Premier League stars are growing increasingly worried by testers clad in full PPE but are happy to go into full contact football with other Premier League stars who have not been tested for three/four days then Premier League stars are losing the bloody plot.

Could’ve been anyone
‘Man Utd can land Ivan Rakitic on FREE transfer as Barcelona outcast insists he will see out Nou Camp contract’ – The Sun website.

Correction: Anyone can land Ivan Rakitic on FREE transfer next summer.

Somehow we feel slightly less interested.

The ‘we expected better’ headline of the day
‘Manchester City eye Chelsea-target Ben Chilwell’ – Telegraph.

That hyphen is making our eyes bleed.

Football365 sh*thouse headline of the day
‘Gossip: Man United ‘very close’ to signing £71.2m midfielder’

It’s not so much that the headline is sh*thouse but that the gossip comes from Don bloody Balon. There was a time when we would not have touched Don Balon with someone else’s barge-pole but now Matt Stead has no shame. Too busy celebrating his dog’s birthday.
