Legends who never won the European Champions League

For a professional footballer to be judged as been great, he needs to have won the grand prize in Europe, the champions league.

There is often no space for grey areas in how we remember players achievement. It is all about the trophies and titles they have won during their playing career.

Today we take a look at some of the legendary players to have graced the pitch but never won the UEFA champions league.

Ronaldo de Lima (El Fenomena)

Nicknamed El Fenomena (the phenomenon), the Brazilian is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, Ronaldo had stints at Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona and Inter Milan, his move to Spain and Italy made him the second player after Maradona to break the world transfer record twice.

Ronaldo was so good he scored 200+ goals for both club and country at age 23, quite unfortunately, he never received the champions league winners medal.

Francesco Totti

Roma’s ‘Golden boy’ deserved far more silverware in his career, but being loyal to a club has its own price, considered one of Roma’s greatest ever player, Totti is also seen as one of the greatest Italian players of all time.

Totti spent his entire playing career at Roma, winning the world cup with Italy, Totti never had the honour of winning the UEFA champions league.

Robert Lewandowski

Now 31, the Polish striker plays for Bayern Munich, joined the Bavarians with hopes of winning the most coveted trophy in Europe, but has since failed to do so.

Bayern won the champions league for the last time in 2013 defeating Dortmund.

Gianlugi Buffon

The goalkeeper has suffered endless heartache in European finals, losing to AC Milan on penalties in 2003, missing out in a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2015, and finally trashed 4-1 by Real Madrid in 2017.

Zlatan Ibrahimovich

Having played for no fewer than six clubs that have won the champions league, it is a great wonder that the 38 year old hasn’t won the champions league. With stints at Ajax, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Barcelona.
Zlatan opted to leave Inter Milan in 2009, with Inter going on to win the Treble same season, his time at Barcelona also came to an end after he was loaned out to AC Milan in 2010, and Barcelona winning the champions league subsequently.
