7 THINGS THAT WORSEN YOUR ULCER

Peptic ulcer disease is a sore or wound sustained in your digestive tract as a result of the imbalance between the corrosive effects of gastric juice and the protective effect of mucus on linings of the stomach.

Ulcers are mostly caused by helicobacter pylori infection and chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs).

When peptic ulcer affects your stomach, it’s called gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer when it affects the first part of your small intestine.

As someone who suffers from peptic ulcer disease, you need to be mindful of the things you consume so that you don’t aggravate or worsen your symptoms

I have taken my time to put up a list of 7 things that can make your ulcer worse. I hope you find them helpful.

1) USE OF NSAIDs

Most times when people feel backache, headache or any kind of pain at all, they visit patent drug stores where they request the drugs store dealer to “mix” pain killers for them.

Most of the time, they are advised to take those pain killers with food because they are majorly NSAIDs.

NSAIDS are pain killers such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen etc. which breakdown the protective barriers of the stomach thereby exposing it to gastric acids.

They not only cause peptic ulcer disease but also worsen the symptoms.

If you are an ulcer patient, desist from indiscriminate intake of pain killers or contact your health care provider whenever you have pain.

2) ALCOHOL INTAKE

Anybody who suffers from peptic ulcer disease should completely abstain from the consumption of alcohol.

It not only causes erosion of your stomach linings but also irritates the pre-existing ulcer thereby exacerbating the symptoms.

Alcohol intake not only increases ulcer pains but can lead to complications like vomiting of blood and defecating of blood.

3) CONSUMPTION OF CITRUS FRUITS

No doubts, fruits and vegetables are needed for the nourishment of the body as they contain vitamins.

But citrus fruits such as grape, oranges, lemon can make ulcer pains worse as they are highly acidic in nature .

4) BEVERAGES

Caffeine containing beverages such as Nescafe, coffee, kola etc have been found to provoke pains in some people suffering from ulcer.

This is because caffeine triggers the back flow of acid from your stomach to your food pipe(acid reflux).

If you experience exacerbated symptoms whenever you take of any of the caffeine containing beverages, then it’s time to delete them from your food menu.

5) HOT SPICY FOODS

Food containing hot spices such as pepper, garlic and other hot seasonings don’t cause peptic ulcer disease but act as irritants on the already existing ulcer.

Foods such as beans has also been reported to cause heartburn sensation in most people with ulcer.

Though, this doesn’t occur in everybody with ulcer.

Nevertheless, you need to find out what foods make your ulcer symptoms worse and then avoid them.

Ulcer patients are also advised to eat at least 2-3 hours before going to bed as it helps relieve the symptoms.

6) SMOKING 🚬

Cigarette and tobbaco consumption aggravate symptoms of ulcer.

This is because they contain nicotine which increases gastric acid production thereby causing irritation to the already existing ulcer.

Smoking 🚬 and tobbaco intake impairs ulcer healing and should be avoided.

7) FASTING

The stomach produces 2 litres of corrosive gastric juices per day of which hydrochloric (Hcl) acid is one of them .

Hcl kills bacteria in the stomach and also helps in the digestion of food.

But when a person starves or fasts for a long period of time, the volume of gastric juice produced increases there by irritating the sores in your stomach.

This why you feel stomach pain sometimes when you are hungry .

A person who suffers from ulcer should not abstain from food for a long period of time.
